Here's our Elephant video of Creative Acts' Sabra Williams—on BLM, George Floyd, the power of the arts in US prisons and “doing the inner work”

We’re delighted to bring you the edited version of our Zoom conversation last week with Sabra Williams, founder of Creative Acts in Los Angeles, and a leading voice in using the arts for prison rehabilitation in California and beyond.

Our talk roamed around recent events like the true meaning of Black Lives Matter and the murder of George Floyd; why white supporters of black/people of colour struggles must do the “inside work first”, examining their own unacknowledged assumptions of supremacy; and how powerfully the arts can create space that can redeem decades of trauma and injury, borne by incarcerated individuals.

It’s a friendly, practical and inspirational conversation. For more on Sabra, see our preview post, with a full bio and a specially commissioned blog from Sabra herself.

Please keep an eye out for our forthcoming live Zoom events - more in our The Elephant Meets series and also Monday’s Out of the Ruins, a new documentary screening about contemporary Greece and the rebirth of democracy (it’s a “watch-party”, come join!).
