Kate Raworth, Jason Hickel and Samuel Fankhauser debate on "degrowth" versus "green growth"

A great discussion (begins here at 5.05) between some of our favourite thinkers and activists on green economics - Kate Raworth of Doughnut Economics moderating a discussion between degrowth advocate Jason Hickel, and “green growth” advocate Samuel Fankhauser. From the YouTube blurb:

As the climate crisis looms ever larger, a critical question has taken the stage: is economic growth incompatible with ecological sustainability? Green growth and degrowth proponents take staunchly different stances, but they do agree on one thing: overhauling the current economic growth model is necessary to avoid catastrophic climate change and ecological degradation. How to do it, on the other hand, is up for debate.

It’s a fascinating discussion. One exchange in the Q&A explores why people, as Samuel Fankhauser claims, are less interested in climate issues “when things are at the bottom of the business cycle”. Hickel’s response is, let’s have more economic democracy, and “get rid of the business cycle altogether!”
